Susan Van Atta”s professional career and community participation have long reflected her concern for environmental quality and planning. In 1977, she graduated from the UCSB with a degree in Environmental Studies. This lead to a career in coastal planning and environmental impact assessment.

Desiring to have a creative role in the environmental planning process, Susan enrolled at CPSU, San Luis Obispo, received a BS in Landscape Architecture in 1983 and founded her own firm in 1985. Since that time, Susan Van Atta has dedicated herself to environmentally appropriate landscape design, habitat restoration, and the use of native plants. She is often called upon to give lectures on topics of design and sustainability at seminars, colleges, and other community forums.

After graduating with a Masters in Fine Art from the University of Arizona, Guillermo returned to graduate school to obtain a Masters in Landscape Architecture. Following his completion of coursework in December 1999, Guillermo moved to Santa Barbara and joined Van Atta Associates. Guillermo’s work as an Artist explored the relationship between human-built space and the natural surroundings in search of a balance. This relationship continues to be a major focus in his work as a Landscape designer. His previous experiences with natural and artificial light, materials, color and space had proved to be a great asset. Some selected projects in which Guillermo has participated while working for Van Atta Associates include: USD Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice, San Diego, California; USD Science Center, San Diego, California; Ojai’s Newest Park, Ojai, California; Pelican Park, Isla Vista, California; and UCSB Lagoon Park, Santa Barbara, California.

Jill studied sociology under Professor Dick Flacks at the University of California at Santa Barbara. In her junior year she served on the UCSB Student Council, focusing on women’s empowerment & social justice issues. Her dedication for the earth grew as she worked with organic farmers and flower growers at the SB Farmers Market. When her children became older she developed her skills as an office manager working with the Santa Barbara Farmers Market Association and the Center for Urban Agriculture at Fairview Gardens.
